About this deal

Norton is good on bristling relationships and catty exchanges – “this is a family matter now”, says Declan’s son with “a bruising lack of subtlety” when Carol implores him not to sell the house.

It started out strong and went on a little too long and kind of lost its way a bit some, but overall I enjoy It. Their relationship, with its remarkable age gap and school-centred beginnings — not to mention the mystery surrounding the sudden disappearance of his ex-wife — is the source of much gossip. Carol’s mother and father are naturally concerned for their daughter and try to help her in anyway they can. Forced back home with her Strong Willed mother Moira, Carol’s life unfolds as she’d never anticipated, and things take a dark turn with a discovery in the family house. Reading anything by GN is like revisiting an old friend, comforting, and reassuring but with all the gossip! So with this as a background, I leapt into Forever Home, which follows Carol, her second relationship with Declan (and his children), but is formulated in the shadow of his first marriage - where did the wife go, and why would she leave her children? Graham Norton has billed his fourth novel as “the funniest and the darkest” story he has tackled yet. But I guess the nature of a small town is that everybody knows who everybody is anyway, and so that's not actually a difference.

This story is as witty and smart as it is moving and poignant, and more than once it brought me to tears as I was reading about the bonds that the characters developed. This provided many new plots, twists, and turns, so stick with it and have fun, because even as you wonder if it's going to derail, or you're going to go nuts, Norton's cheery voice keeps luring and lulling you back in.Forever Home audiobook narrated by the author, Graham Norton, is definitely a "Yes, please" and "Thank you very much" experience for me. His wife abandoned the family home many years ago and there is an air of mystery surrounding her disappearance. His skill at gimlet-eyed observation and nuanced characterisation is *chef's kiss* but this book is SO FUNNY. There is a great story here with a bit of a mystery and I enjoyed every minute of it whether I was laughing or crying. From there, we look at the relationships between women - the mothers, daughters, friends, and step-children in the stories, leading towards a surprising conclusion. It's a complex and compelling story - truly unputdownable - but most importantly for me, it has real heart. SHAPIRO: Before we get to this specific book, what does writing fiction do for you, broadly speaking, that interviewing celebrities on "The Graham Norton Show" does not? Is taken from my mother, where - you know, silence in the car to me is you're driving along silently. Why I'm reading this: I enjoyed the tv series based on Norton's previous novel, Holding, so thought I'd give his latest book a whirl. Carol and Moira find themselves in a horrible situation which they can't tell anyone about, especially Dave and have a mystery they have no idea how to solve. I really enjoyed Forever Home and I can equally imagine reading it on holiday somewhere sunny as I could whilst curled up inside when it's chilly outside.

Their mother abandoned them years ago, and they don't like the idea of Carol moving in and replacing their mother in Declan's affections. Forever Home follows Carol Crottie, a secondary school English teacher whose private life has captivated her small Irish town. His children are untrusting and cruel, and Carol is forced to leave their beloved home and its worn oak floors and elegant features and move back in with her parents. It is wonderfully intricate with 'normal' people as characters who you will want to gossip about alongside everyone else in the community!Effortlessly readable, possessed of a super twist and full of rounded characters to keep close to your heart. I devoured this novel within two days, it was an absolute joy to read and I highly recommend it to all. Although I feel like this novel is quite a different kind of story from Graham Norton's other novels (not sure why exactly - perhaps just because we're focusing on a woman as the main character this time? Declan gets Alzheimer's and his children use all of their power to do what they want with their dad and his house. Carol’s situation that she ended up in was also a shocking example of what happens when you give up all your own assets and agency for a partner.
