Two of the biggest differences between the Thorogood Moc Toe and the Red Wing Classic Moc are: 1.) speed hooks, and 2.) the fiberglass shank. These are also leather lined for extra comfort, which is yet another reason the price is bonkers because I’ve made boots by hand before and leather lining really does add a significant amount of extra work to the process. So while they’re less comfortable out of the box, I can vouch that they’re more comfortable about 6 months in.

The Red Wings have a crepe rubber sole, and while I normally don’t like crepe rubber, this sole must be the highest possible crepe quality because it’s way more sturdy than other crepe soles I’ve tried. The first thing that stands out is the shape—it’s made with a classic Moc Toe construction, which has a u-shaped piping detail running at the top of the toe box.

Below is a look at my used pair of Thorogood American Heritage boots. As you can see, the seams have held up well and the boot itself still holds its shape. For starters, it’s an exceptionally versatile moc toe. You’ll notice that while it’s still roomy, the toe box is actually less square and more round, making this easier to dress up if you want to while retaining its casual-cool chic. A lot of guys (me included) prefer speed hooks. The Thorogood Moc Toe has three speed hooks near the top, though the top lace is an eyelet, which I don’t understand—I’ve never seen that on another boot. In short, the Red Wing Moc Toe is constructed more robustly than the Thorogood Moc Toe, and the leather is higher quality, too. And in my opinion, it’s better looking, as well. Not just because the profile is a little more tailored, but because the leather from S.B. Foot Tanning Company is more interesting. Alden has been making boots in New England since the 19th century, and as you can see, this is not a chunky work boot like the average moc toe. The brand has a history of developing orthopedic footwear, so the last is famously comfortable and anatomically correct. Many of the brand’s faithful customers only buy Alden boots because they find it helps to remedy foot pain. (This, of course, isn’t medical advice!)
