There are still eight unreleased tracks as well - all good (better than 99% of Blur's back-catalogue, anyway) though not quite of the calibre of the material on "Extras".

I've read stories of crackly, skipping, dust-ridden, fingerprint-ridden slabs of junk leaving this pressing plant. One of the most popular bands to emerge from the English punk rock scene of 1977; The Jam had a phenomenal impact on pop music and wider youth culture. Weller's voice is in great form, but here the anguish and the anger sit closer together and in my humble opinion show a more mature and majestic depth to one of the great English bands of all time.Weller's poetic and sarcastic wit combine with edgy but poppy tunes to really make this the jam's standout album. It’s regarded by critics and fans (as well as Weller) as their most adventurous and experimental collection of material, drawing musical influences from the ‘post-punk’ groups of the late-70s - Wire, Gang Of Four and Joy Division as well as neo-psychedelic touches from The Beatles and The Zombies etc. Scrape Away is a classic for those desperate to leave it all behind, and Monday – thankfully far less depressing than its namesake – combines the melancholy of Embarrassment-era Madness with Byrds jangle. Its my favourite Jam album as well as one of my favourite “post-punk” albums full stop, so I think I’ll invest in an original and see how they sound together. That was the sort of sound he imagined we should be going for: hard, metallic, quite stripped-down… jagged.

No trace of that here: he is furious, and seems to run forward, dragging the other players with him, towards the ballot box, and they can hardly keep pace. The original sounds much more dynamic, the sound is rich and full, each instrument and vocal track is clean and sounds great.Of the countless songs about working class British life released in the last three decades, it’s strange one so ostensibly slight is so breathtaking.

BirdsEye fish fingers, Heinz baked beans and chips (from the chip pan, slightly overdone), accompanied by a mug of tea and served on a wobbly wooden coffee table to a backdrop of a Grundig Colour TV showing the end credits of "The Changes" (hence the pylon reference)?

It wasn't until first hearing `Going Underground' in the early 2000's on VH1 Classic that I decided to investigate some of The Jam's music. This involved consulting a few of the band's friends as to what they thought the best release would be. If `The Gift' and `Setting Sons' are given the deluxe treatment, and remastered by the same engineer, I'll happily re-purchase those as well. Set the House Ablaze is even better than that, a terrifying but terrific look at fascism on the rise in Europe at the dawn of the 80s.

So many good songs here, this for me is the Jam in full flight, full of ideas, full of vitality and mile stone melodies that worm there way deep into your psyche. The album followed the band’s first number one single – Going Underground and features the group’s second UK number one single, Start!I am unfamiliar with any previous release that may have been remastered by him but if this is the kind of quality that comes as a result, Universal mastering should hire him to remaster the entire back catalog of the Siouxsie and the Banshees botched remasters. Weller's Rickenbacker is just crackling with treble - this is not guitar-playing as much as the buzz of a chainsaw! Nice chunky bass that reverberates in your chest, I swear it sounds like the 4001s Foxton used to play and yet the inner sleeve clearly shows him transitioning to a Precision bass.
